Honorary citizenships presented by Kastamonu Municipality (1922-2017)

In this study, honorary citizenships presented by Kastamonu Municipality are studied. Honorary citizenships are generally presented to presidents of Turkish Republic, prime ministers, ministers, deputies, and governors who contributed economic development of the city of Kastamonu and improved the town planning and beauty of the city, and also any other people who wanted to bepresented honorary citizenship. Honorary citizenships can be presented only by decision taken by council of Kastamonu Municipality. The main sources of this study are the book named: Governors of Kastamonu (1838 – 2000) by Mustafa ESKİ and source of Kastamonu local press. There is not any archive record of Kastamonu Municipality about honorary citizenships presented before 1992, therefore in this study honorary citizenships of this period are not found. There is also no record about the study in bibliography of articles, National Thesis Center, and National Library. The result of study is that honorary citizenships have been presented generally to executive managers who contributed to development of the city. Due to this reason, the presidents, prime ministers, ministers, deputies, and governors' contribution to the city are mainly studied and added to this master thesis. In this study, 26 honorary citizens of Kastamonu are found. When examining for the reason of presenting, honorary citizenships were generally presented to civil and military managers, deputies, ministers, prime ministers, and presidents. Apart from these for example Rauf DENKTAŞ, Abdülcemil KIRIMOĞLU etc. who have taken a prominent role in political ideology of Turkishness were presented honorary citizenships of Kastamonu as an indication of national sensation.
