Abstract (EN)

The purpose of this study is to analyse the constitution and development process of Kastamonu Cumhuriyet Square in the urban pattern of Kastamonu, to compare with the spaces which are defined as a square and finally to discover the role of the square in the urban pattern.The City of Kastamonu, has become the capital of the principality which was founded in Western Black Sea Region, in the Era of Principalities. Also, in the Ottoman era, Kastamonu has become the central city of regional administration.. Furthermore, Kastamonu has become an important city because of the importance of commercial activities. Each administrative state has contributed the development of the urban pattern, by building structures. In this way, the urban pattern can be observed clearly at the present day.In the context of this study, it will be observed the history of settlement in Kastamonu city and constitution of the urban pattern, defining the public squares of Kastamonu with the concept of square, defining the relation between Kastamonu Cumhuriyet Square and the concept of westernization and finally explaining the spatial and urban results of the square as a place in the urban pattern of Kastamonu.Keywords: Kastamonu, urban pattern, square, westernization.
