Abstract (EN)
With the spread of modern technology, diversification of commercial goods and services, the increase of consumption with the increasing population, boosted the volume and variety of waste produced, therefore management and storage of waste has gained importance. According to the estimates made by the World Bank, greenhouse gas emission values are expected to reach 2.6 billion tons of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2050 due to the inability to manage solid wastes properly. For this reason, activities aimed at accelerating recycling, which is an important method for waste reduction and resource recovery, have gained importance. However, local governments fail to develop strategies on these issues. This study focuses on solid waste management systems in municipalities, which are local administrative units. Büyükçekmece District was chosen as the study place. Up-to-date data was received in line with the interviews and communication with Büyükçekmece Municipality. These data were used to evaluate eleven indicators. In the analyzes made, the institutional solid waste management of the municipality, the projects and targets implemented were examined, and the deficiencies of the existing system were determined in line with the indicators covering the environmental, economic and social impacts determined. As a result of the analysis, it was revealed that recycling activities were carried out in the district municipality, but these should be improved. Environmental, sociological and economic factors are ignored within the system. Suggestions were made to improve the system in line with the identified deficiencies, and projects that were implemented on a global scale and yielded efficiency were used to develop strategies.
