Evaluation of the effects of synbiotics on uremic toxins in the treatment of chronic renal failure in cat

This study was carried out to determine the effects of orally administered synbiotic bacteria on uremic toxins in cats with chronic renal failure. Cats with chronic renal failure included in the study were staged according to the IRIS 2019 classification guideline. Cats in stages 2 and above were randomly divided into 2 groups. In the first group (n=10), in addition to conventional treatment, oral synbiotic capsules containing inulin with L. acidophilus (5x109 cfu) and B. Longum (5x109 cfu) bacteria were administered as 1 capsule per 2.5 kg body weight for 30 days, while the second group (n=10) was treated with conventional renal failure treatment alone. Hematological and serum biochemical (urea, creatinine, indoxyl sulfate, malondialdehyde, phosphorus, SDMA) analyzes were performed by sampling the cats included in the study on days 0, 15 and 30. In addition, systemic blood pressure measurements and clinical scoring were made and recorded. Obtained data revealed that the uremic toxins, Urea, Creatinine, Symmetrical Dimethylarginine and Indoxyl Sulfate levels of the animals in the group treated with the synbiotic capsule were significantly lower than the cats in the conventional treatment group and clinical scores were found to be significantly better in the group treated with the synbiotic capsule compared to the conventional treatment group. It was determined that there was no significant difference in hematological parameters, kidney lengths and blood pressure values. As a result, it was concluded that synbiotics applied in addition to conventional treatment in cats with chronic kidney failure will contribute to the conventional treatment by improving clinical symptoms as well as reducing the level of uremic toxins.
