Urban space and security: the spatial projection of youngperception of security in Eskişehir

The production of space through lived experiences is related to space being a social product. Urban structures and spaces, which are scenes of interpersonal relationships in daily life are shaped by the culture, structure and values of the society in which they are located. The relationship that space users establish with the space is also influenced by these mentioned factors. In this context, the perception of space gains meaning through social practices. This study is based on the assumption that urban space users perception of securit, influenced by the physical and social structure of the space, affect their spatial preferences and behaviors within the space. Therefore, this thesis aims to understand the issue of security perception in urban spaces by referring to the views and experiences of young adults living in Eskişehir Bağlar. To this end in depth interviews were conducted with young adults living in the Eskişehir Bağlar area, guided by semi-structured interview questions prepared for this purpose. The results of the research reveal the security perceptions of urban space users are shaped by other urban space users and the useage practices of urban spaces revolve around these security perceptions. This research aims to reveal and contribute to making visible the relevance of the security issue in urban spaces within social life.
