Abstract (EN)
Throughout history, "the other" became one of the basic concepts of social sciences. The concept was formed through modern ideology and then turned out to be one of the most important concept of the 21st century. Cities, as the places which contain diversity, happened to be the center of cases that produced notions occured via "the other" concept as marginalization, xenophobia, discrimination, exclusion and so on. The research is composed of the perception of differences in the city. In the study, urban individuals' perceptions of differences and their descriptions of diversity are analyzed. It includes three parts. The first part focuses on conceptual and theoretical frameworks. First, the concept of identity and its relations with other concepts are discussed. Secondly, concept of other, marginalization and the relation between others and societies are identified. Finally, the cases about city and use of urban space are evaluated. The second part of the research lays out the issue of living together with others which is evaluated under two sub-headings. Frst one is based on the factors that affect communication with others. In that part, stereotypes, prejudices, internal and external gruops and their effects on process of communication with others are taken into consideration. The second sub-heading focuses on otherness and its social process. Final section of the research contains a comprehensive data analysis through the qualitative research conducted in Üsküdar district with 30 interviewees. After explaining the methods and techniques; code/concept maps, charts and analysis that constittutes within framework of QDA Miner Qualitative Data Analysis Programme are also explained.
