Evaluation of meibography and dry eye findings in patients with keratoconus

Objective: To compare the results between keratoconus and dry eye by examining the presence and symptoms of dry eye in keratoconus patients. Materials and Methods: A group of 50 patients diagnosed with keratoconus and 50 control groups without any eye problems other than refraction errors were included in the study. Detailed eye examinations were performed for all volunteer participants. Best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), intraocular pressure measurements, biomicroscopic anterior and posterior segment examination were performed. Corneal tomography was taken for each of the patients in the keratoconus and control groups with a Pentacam, Oculus 5M Topography device. At the same visit, dry eye parameters were measured with the Oculus Keratograph 5M device. Results: There were a total of 30 female and 70 male participants in the keratoconus and control groups with an average age of 25.1±15 (17-47). There was no significant difference in age and gender between both groups. Ocular surface disease index, tear meniscus level, non-contact tear breakup time, Schirmer test, and meibography measurement values were significantly lower in the keratoconus group compared to the control group. The degree of ocular surface staining was significantly higher in the keratoconus group. Conclusion: It was observed that meibography and dry eye tests were in favor of the presence of dry eye in the participant group diagnosed with keratoconus compared to the control group.
