The phenomenon of intimacy on interpersonal communication process: A research in the context of phone calling and messaging

Today, there is interpersonal communication among many areas in which information and communication technology affects. The developments and changes experienced in these technologies also create new communication environments. Therefore, the dimension of interpersonal communication is also changing. In this period, while information and communication technologies easily change our lives, mobile phones, which are a technology tool, are widely used as intercommunication means. Communication through phone calls or messaging has become a habit over time for various reasons within the society. In recent times, communication over the phone is considered sufficient according to the thought of most people. However, given the opportunities offered by face-to-face communication, there are gaps that cannot be filled by telephone communication. It is thought that communication can not be seen in a positive way unless an intimate relationship is established between individuals. According to this, the fact of intimacy in interpersonal communication has become an issue worth examining in the context of phone calls and messaging. The aim of this study is to examine telephone calling and messaging which is a way of choice for individuals through the phenomenon of intimacy. As it is the first study to be carried out in this field and contribute to the literature is valuable in terms of emphasizing the importance of the study. In the method part of the study, qualitative method was used as the second method of the study in order to support and enrich the information obtained by quantitative method. In this study, mixed method is preferred to increase the validity and reliability of the study in order to support the information obtained. As a result of the findings within the research, it was ascertained that there are two different points of view relating to the phenomenon of intimacy in interpersonal communication by means of telephone calling and messaging. While a group of people think that their relations with the people around them is important, the other group does not give such a great meaning to human relations. These groups, who give communication and relations a different meaning, evaluate the contribution of calling and messaging to human relations in a different way. People who find their relationship with other people are significant have an opinion that calling and messaging on the phone does not contribute much to sincerity. They also argue that relationship and communication are more important and valuable through face-to-face meeting. People who do not have a lot of meaning in their relations with other people think that it is sufficient, even, practical and useful for the relations of call and messaging.
