Mass communication technologie and false consciousness

It is seen that recently the studies on mass communication have increased. Socialsciences and in particular sociology have accorded a great importance to the field of masscommunication and the reason for that is the power of which in bringing about socialtransformations.In this study, it is argued that in order to understand the social transformations thatmass communication technologies caused we need to give central importance to the conceptof ?false consciousness?. Mass media and in particular television has many functions likebroadcasting. However, it should not be ignored that mass communication has also createdfalse consciousness both in political and economic terms.For bourgeoisie it is very essential to impose false consciousness on masses about theage in which they live. In order to achieve this goal, bourgeoisie uses mass media. However,not only the economic classes but also political ones find mass media useful. That is,politicians aim to impose false consciousness on their electorate by using mass media.Within this framework, the development of mass media in Turkey is researched byconsidering the relations between politics and economy. The basic funding of this research isthat there is a certain relation between mass communication and false consciousness. Whenwe place the concepts of ?mass culture? and ?culture industry? on the basis of our analysis,the process of false consciousness becomes more understandable. By analyzing thedevelopment and monopolization of Turkish mass media, we reach a conclusion that inexplaining the process of false consciousness the concepts of mass culture and cultureindustry are indeed necessary to be held in the centre of the analysis.
