Evaluation of diabetes and associated factors among patients with cholecystitis and cholelithiasis

This study is conducted to evaluate diabetes and associated factors among patients with cholecystitis and cholelithiasis. Overall 1520 patients with cholecystitis and cholelithiasis who were 20 years and elder, without prior malignancy and gastrointestinal diagnosis were identified from 1st January 2007 to 31st December 2011 at Şişli Etfal Hospital. Research data were collected between 6th July 2012 and 6th October 2012 from patient records, retrospectively. Among 1520 patients, 30.1% (457 people) were identified to have cholecystitis disease and 69.9% (1063 people) were identified to have cholelithiasis disea. 15.3% (70 people) patients with cholecystitis and 11.9% (126 people) patients with cholelithiasis also were identified to have diabetes. This study resulted %12.9 diabetes prevalence similar to 13% for studies on general Turkish population. Among cholecystitis patients 20.4% (93 people) were thin-normal while 79.6% (364 people) were overweight-obese. For the cholelithiasis patients these numbers were 20.9% (215 people) and 79.1% (815 people) respectively. This study showed that patients with gall bladder diseases significantly has higher body mass index compared to Turkish population. 57.8% (264 people) of the cholecystitis patients were women and 42.2% (193 people) were men. 77.6% (825 people) of the cholelithiasis patients were women and 22.4% (238 people) were men. Mean age of the cholecystitis and cholelithiasis patients were calculated as 55.2 ± 17.6 and 49.8 ± 14.5 respectively. Diabetes and associated factors are studied among cholecystitis and cholelithiasis patients. The outcomes are evaluated together with current literature.
