SUMMARY SURROUNDING MUCOSA CHANGES IN COLORECTAL CARCINOMAS AND THE OTHER LESIONS OF THE COLON (HISTOCHEMICAL AND MORPHOLOGIC EVALUATION OF 59 COLON RESECTION SPECIMENS) In this study, 59 colon resection specimens were investigated at Department of Pathology in Gazi University School of Medicine. Forty-six colorectal carcinomas, other neoplastic and nonneoplastic lesions were evaluated for hyperplasic changes and mucin histochemistry by applying HE, HID/AB-pH 2,5 and PB/KOH/PAS staining methods. While the TM can often be seen in the mucosa surrounding the colorectal carcinoma, it is determined that mucosal hyperplasia is not always together with secretion of the sialomucin. Mucosal hyperplasia was observed less often, especially in the TMs which were presenting as solitary and scattering foci in the borders of the resection, distant from the tumour. Decreasing of the O-acetyl sialomucin in the mucosa near to the colorectal carcinoma and loss of it in the carcinoma were observed. However this was also found in the neoplasms other than colorectal carcinomas and in the nonneoplastic lesions of the colon. Although the secretion of O-acetyl sialomucin was diminished or totally absent in adenomatous polyps, with severe degree of dysplasia, some adenomatous polyps with mildor moderate degree of dysplasia contained no or very little O-acetyl sialomucin. The TM was not determined among the polyps in the familial polyposis coli but It was present in the surrounding mucosa of the neoplastic processes other than colorectal carcinomas, malign lymphoma, malign carcinoid, metastatic tumours, lipoma, nonspecific inflammatory processes, perforated diverticulitis, ischemic colitis and colon traumas. In conclusion; it will be more appropriate to accept that the TM is a nonspecific secondary reaction which can be also seen in the other benign and malign lesions of the colon rather than being a specific preneoplastic mucosal change for colorectal carcinoma. 67
