Folk remedies of Konak (Malatya) area

Aim: This study is conducted to determine the folk medicine traditionally used for the Konak, town of Yeşilyurt, province of Malatya. Material and Method: Between May 2015 and November 2016, three communities of Konak are visited and more than 100 people are interviewed, 68 of them (38.2% male, 61.8% female) are accepted as source people and their average age is calculated as 64. A total of 243 herbarium specimens are collected along with the source people participating in the fieldwork. The collected samples are kept in the Herbarium of Inonu University Faculty of Pharmacy. Results: 86 taxa belonging to 35 families, 68 genera and 85 species are evaluated in the context of folk medicines. 62 of these are wildly harvested, 19 are cultivated, and 5 are those from open markets, herbalists or spice sellers. Plants belonging to families of Lamiaceae (14), Asteraceae (11) and Rosaceae (11) are mostly used. Conclusion: The most used plants are; Origanum vulgare L. subsp. gracile (K.Koch) Ietsw., Euphorbia grisophylla M.L.S.Khan., Euphorbia macrocarpa Bioss. & Buhse., Pelargonium endlicherianum Fenzl, Rosa canina L., Mentha longifolia (L.) L. subsp. longifolia, Mentha pulegium L. and Mentha spicata L. subsp. spicata. The ICF factor is calculated. The most common uses for stomach pain and ulcers (FIC: 0.919) and colds (FIC: 0.947) were found. Internal usage (62.5%) is more than external usage (37.5%). In internal usage it is mostly preferred to use in infusion (15.5%) or through various procedures (15.5%).
