Abstract (EN)

This study analyzes the development, beliefs, and practices of Korean Buddhism. Buddhist traditions in Korea have developed over time and have become an important part of society. The study examines the main teachings of Korean Buddhism within the Mahayana tradition. It also looks at practical elements such as temple rituals, Seon/Zen meditation, modern movements like Won Buddhism, Buddhist festivals and discusses their effects on individual and social life. The aim of this thesis is to explain the role and changes of Buddhism in Korean society from cultural, historical, and philosophical perspectives. The findings show that Korean Buddhism developed through interaction with local shamanistic beliefs and Confucian moral values, creating a unique religious and socio-cultural tradition. Rituals in Korean Buddhism are not only acts of worship but are also part of daily life, supporting social belonging, memory, and identity. In addition, meditation-based practices in the Seon/Zen tradition focus on inner change and encourage personal awareness and spiritual freedom through mental discipline. Finally, despite periods of state pressure throughout history, Buddhism has continued to exist and remains influential in modern Korea as a cultural and social tradition.
