Evaluation of the vaccination status of coronavirus patients who were admitted to intensive care, intubated, and deceased since the beginning of the coronavirus vaccination

Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of the Coronavirus vaccine on COVID-19 patients who are hospitalized in intensive care, intubated, and deceased.In the 1-year period from the start date of vaccination against Coronavirus, 13.01.2021, to 13.01.2022, 1,545 Coronavirus patients treated in the Coronavirus intensive care units of these hospitals were examined in terms of age, gender, the day their tests were positive and on which day they were admitted to the intensive care unit, the day they were intubated and the day they died, and the doses and types of Coronavirus vaccines administered. While accessing patient data, the Ministry of Health's Public Health Management System (HSYS), AŞILA program, E-Pulse data, and the hospitals' Hospital Information Management System automation programs were used. Descriptive statistics are given as numbers and percentages; data that do not conform to normal distribution are presented with median, minimum-maximum data. The Mann-Withney U test was used to evaluate statistical significance.The study included 1,480 individuals hospitalized in intensive care and whose data were accessible. The median age of the participants was 69.0 (0.0-102.0) and 54.0% were male. 54.8% of the patients were intubated, and the median time from the date of positivity to the date of intubation was 8.0 (0.0-86.0) days. 60.6% of the patients died, and the median time from the date of positivity to the date of death was 14.0 (0.0-99.0) days. The median age of the female participants was 72.0 (0.0-102.0), which is higher than the median age of the male participants (p<0.001). The number of participants with accessible vaccination data was 1,476. 35.6% of these participants had never received a Coronavirus vaccine. 52.2% had Sinovac vaccine as the 1st dose and 12.2% had Biontech vaccine. 45.6% of the participants had Sinovac as the 2nd dose and 10.3% had Biontech. 12.6% of the participants had Sinovac as the 3rd dose and 10.6% had Biontech. The rate of intubation in patients was higher in those who had Sinovac as the 1st dose compared to those who had Biontech and those who were unvaccinated and higher in those who were unvaccinated compared to those who had Biontech (p<0.001). The rate of intubation in patients was lower in those who had Sinovac and Biontech as the 2nd dose compared to those who had no vaccination and lower in those who had Biontech than those who had Sinovac (p<0.001). The rate of intubation in patients who received the 3rd and 4th doses of Sinovac and Biontech was lower than those who had never been vaccinated (p<0.001). The frequency of intubation in patients who received the 5th dose of Biontech was lower than those who were not vaccinated (p<0.001).The results of this study showed that vaccination has a protective effect against intensive care admission, intubation, and death. In addition, chronic diseases, advanced age, and male gender had a negative effect on the prognosis of COVID-19 disease.
