Determining surgical pain incidance and amount of analgesic use for patients in General Surgery Clinic of Kocaeli university Faculty of Medicine Research and Training Hospital

In the whole world, surgical patients frequently complain about post-operative pain. Despite the improvements in pharmacology and technology, post-operative pain still remains important problem. This was a descriptive study conducted in a surgery clinic to determine patients? pain incidence, analgesic use, patients? satisfaction level of analgesia and related factors. Our research was conducted between 01.09.2012-01.01.2013 in general surgery clinic of Kocaeli University Research and Training Hospital. Patients who undergone abdominal surgical operation and at post operative day two were included the study. One hundred and fifty patients accepted to participate. Quantitative evaluation scale was used to determine patients pain and satisfaction level. Researcher interviewed with each patient alone after 6 p.m. and data was recorded to research paper. According to findings in our study 77.3% of the patients have different levels of pain and 22.7% does not have any pain. There is no relationship between pain and personal demographics, previous surgery and pain from different origin. We also found that 3% of the patient do not use any analgesics, 78% of the patient use only opioids and the rest of the patients use NSAID, opioid or acetaminophen (parasetamol) alone or combined intravenously. Patients satisfaction level of surgical pain treatment does not related to personal demographics or type of surgery but we found that surgical pain level affects patients satisfaction level; while the more surgical pain the less patient satisfaction occur. In conclusion post operative pain is founded to have high incidence. Patient satisfaction level become less when surgical pain level is more.
