Investigation of serum irisin levels in chronic atrial fibrillation and cardioversion performed atrial fibrillation

SUMMARY Investigation of Serum Irisin Levels in Chronic Atrial Fibrillation and Cardioversion Performed Atrial Fibrillation Objective: The primary objective of the study is observation of the change in serum irisin level in acute atrial fibrillation (AF) patients undergoing cardioversion. Secondary objective is to examine diagnostic value in permanent (chronic) AF. Methods: This clinical trial was planned as a randomized prospective case-control study. After approval of ethical Committee, patients who applied Karadeniz Teknik Üniversitesi Emergency and Cardiology department with acute atrial fibrillation were taken into study. Irisin levels were measured in serum samples taken at the time of admission and at 24 and 72 hours after cardioversion to sinus rhythm and these values were statistically compared. In the case of permanent AF patients who were the other target population of the study, the serum samples taken at the time of admission and compared with serum samples of healty control subjects. Results: 149 patients with cardioversion due to acute AF were included, but 117 patients with exclusion criteria were excluded. In 32 patients with AF, there was no statistically significant difference between irisin levels measured at admission and 24th and 72nd hours after sinus rhythm establishment with cardioversion (p=0.893). For permanent AF patients, 149 patients were included. After the exclusion criteria, 20 healthy and 20 patients were included in the study. Serum irisin levels were measured but there was no significant difference between the two groups (p=0,323). Conclusion: In patients who underwent cardioversion due to acute AF, there was no significant difference in serum irisin levels measured at admission and 24th and 72nd hours. Serum irisin level is not valuable for diagnosis of permanent AF when compared with healty controls. Keywords: Atrial fibrillation, irisin
