The effect of oral health quality of life on general quality of life in individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

This research was carried out descriptively, cross-sectionally and relationally in order to examine the effect of oral health quality of life on general quality of life in individuals with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. The research was conducted between 20.03.2020/20.11.2021 with 180 patients hospitalized in the Chest Diseases Department of Yozgat City Hospital who accepted the research. Ethics committee approval and written permissions of institutions and patients have been obtained for the study. The data were collected using the introductory characteristics form, Oral Assessment Guide, Oral Health Impact Profile Scale (OHIP-14), Oral and Dental Health Quality of Life Scale (OHQoL-UK) and SF-36 Quality of Life Scale. Number, percentage, minimum and maximum values, average and standard deviation, correlation Linear Regression Analysis were used in the evaluation of the data. The average Oral assessment guide was 13.96±2.87. The average overall score of the OHIP-14 scale was 13.04±12.28, the overall total score of the OHQoL-UK scale was 42.23±7.02, the overall physical health subdivision score of the SF-36 quality of life scale was 29.73±20.43 and the overall mental health subdivision score was 39.42±18.11. It was determined that there was a significant, negative and weak relationship between the symptom and pain score (r=0.208) of the patients, positively and very poorly, between the physical pain and general health perception score (r=-0.538), in a significant, negative and moderate level, between the OHIP overall total and the overall physical health score (r=-0.419). It has been determined that the lower dimension of OHIP-14 psychological inadequacy fatigues the physical quality of life of the patients. (R= .535, R²= .257). It has been determined that the lower dimension of OHIP-14 psychological inadequacy fatigues the mental quality of life of the patients. (R=.553, R²= .289). It is recommended to conduct further research to examine the relationship between dental health-related quality of life and overall health quality of life and to provide training to improve the dental health quality of patients.
