Abstract (EN)
In this study, the concept of deadpan aesthetics used in fashion photography was examined within the framework of culture industry theory. The concept of Deadpan, which emerged in the first quarter of the twentieth century, means an expressionless, dull face. Deadpan, which is described as being free of any mimics that can show human emotions to the other side, has been accepted as an aesthetic form frequently seen in the art of photography since the 1990s. Many photographers have benefited from this aesthetic form in the field of photography and the deadpan aesthetic has been frequently seen in fashion photography works. In this study, the places of use of deadpan aesthetics in contemporary fashion photography are examined, and the historical process of fashion photography from past to present is explained. In this study, in which past and current fashion photography examples are examined, the historical course of Deadpan aesthetics is explained and the fashion shoots and the way this aesthetic is used are exemplified. Fashion photographs made within the scope of this work were published online between 19 May 2022 – 30 June 2022 in the virtual photography exhibition Deadpan. Within the scope of the project, which includes 50 fashion photographs in total, five models were included and a total of seventeen different outfit combinations were realized.
