Investigation of image based systems in 3D modeling studies of cultural heritages:Kızılören Han example

ABSTRACT With the developing technology, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been used intensively as an image acquisition platform for data production with photogrammetric techniques. Thanks to its low cost, speed, repetitive flight capability and high resolution of the cameras used, UAV images are especially preferred for mapping of small areas and image based 3D modeling applications. In this thesis, image based 3D modeling has been performed with different software from UAV images of historical Kızılören Han on Konya Beyşehir road and accuracy analysis has been performed on the produced 3D models. Two commercial (Agisoft Photoscan and Pix4D Mapper) and one free open source (AKK) software (VisualSFM) were used in the application. Free Mehslab software was also used to produce a mesh model from the dense point cloud produced with VisualSFM software. Check points were used for accuracy analysis. As a result of the evaluations, the horizontal and vertical position accuracy values of the 3D model produced using Agisoft PhotoScan and Pix4D Mapper commercial software were calculated as approximately 1 cm. In the accuracy analysis performed for the 3D model produced using free VisualSFM and Meshlab software, the accuracy of horizontal and vertical position was determined as 11.28 cm and 8.24 cm, respectively. According to these results, it is seen that it is possible to obtain cm level accuracy with commercial software in image based 3D modeling studies and free software produces coarser accuracy values and needs to be developed.
