Netflix in the context of intercultural communication: An investigation of cultural codes of Turkish-made original series

Man, who constitutes the essential element of culture, is both the creator of the culture and the transmitter of it to the next generations. A person creates his own cultural structure over time with what he experiences by living in the society he was born into. Although the cultural values of each social structure are different, these values are shaped on the axis of common elements. In the developing and changing world order, it is new communication technologies that manage, direct and keep people within the limits they set. New communication technologies have an impact on individuals feelings and thoughts, opinions and attitudes and behaviors. At the same time, while allowing the individual to have information about his/her own culture easily, it has a high impact power in terms of getting to know and understanding different cultures. The society adopts the elements of not only the culture it is in but also other cultural structures through new communication technologies. In this context, digital content platforms, which contain cores from many cultures and are a very effective channel in reaching large masses, have become an important tool for recognizing and adopting different cultures. Within the scope of the research, the elements of Turkish social structure and cultural elements in the Turkish-made original series broadcast on Netflix, the digital content platform operating on an international scale, were examined in the context of the culture onion model and cultural dimensions theory. As a result of the research, the cultural elements and social structure elements of the TV series "Bir Başkadır" and "50M2", which were selected using the purposeful sampling technique among the original Turkish TV series, were revealed on the basis of the Turkish society and cultural structure.
