Determination of gamma-ray absorption coefficients of some materials used in fabric coating

Abstract (EN)

In this study, it is aimed to investigate new materials that can be an alternative to lead in order to protect or minimize the harmful effects of gamma radiation. For this purpose, some of the materials used printing or coating processes in textile are provided, and gamma light absorption coefficients are determined experimentally. In the first stage of this study, which examined a total of seven products, measurements were made by coating the fabric surfaces with a thickness of about 1 mm with the specified chemicals. It was determined that four of the measured chemicals were not armored and three of them were gamma ray stopping power. In the continuation of the study, thicker surfaces were obtained with three chemicals determined and second measurements were performed. Cs137, Cd109, Co57, Co60, Mn54, Ba133 and Na22 were used as the source and measurements were made for each sample. Then, the data obtained were analyzed using Beer Lambert's Law, and the gamma-ray absorption coefficients were determined. As a result of the study, it was determined that the absorption power of the tablets formed with Pigmacolor Glitter Silver Paste and Pigmacolor Metalic Paste was effective in the 0-200 keV range. In the imaging processes performed in nuclear medicine units, radioisotopes with gamma-ray energy ~ 120-140 keV ranges are commonly used such as Tc-99m and Tl-201. In this context, it is foreseen that these two chemicals can be used as armor material in these units.
