Torment in the Quran In this study, the view of the Quran about the torment (azap) is tried to be put forward by examining the torment that is one of the basic concepts of the Quran and the other words and concepts related to torment from different aspects. The thesis consists of the introduction and four sections. In the introduction, the information about the purpose and importance of the study and also the method that has been followed in this study is given. In the first section, primarily, the etymological structure of the torment concept is examined. Subsequently, its distribution map in the Quran is elicited by identifying the different patterns of the torment and its noun phrases forming with other words. In the second section, the words that are related to the torment in terms of close or opposite meaning are detected and analysed and so the meaning area of the torment is determined. The torment's close meaning words are examined under the three titles, and it is emphasised on the torment's secular-ethereal and material-spiritual aspects. Also, by analysing the antonyms, the attention is drawn to the message of the Quran about the balance of torment-mercy/grace and the concord of crime-penalty. In the third section, the meaning frame of the torment concept in the Quran is detected under the four headings. In the first heading, it is informed about the secular torment kinds and the denier and defeatist societies that were perished in the past. The second heading is reserved for the verses which are interpreted as the torment of grave. In the third heading, the ethereal torment is examined from the somatic and spiritual aspects. In the fourth heading, apart from these three stages, it is referred to different meanings consisting torment according to its context. In the fourth section of the study, theological and practical situations which cause torment are referred. In the second part of this section, the use of sunnetollah concept in the Quran and its meaning frame is identified because of its relevance of torment. Then, the constant and stable fundamentals, which are based on God's torment, are identified. The study is completed with the obtained results that are stated in the conclusion.
