Fictional museums

This thesis headed "Fictional Museums" analyses these museums in Turkey and the world in terms of foundation, organization, administration, collections, exhibition and presentation methods, and current conditions. First of all the concepts of fiction, reality and fictional works are explained in the thesis. These concepts, which are very important throughout the thesis, have been tried to be clarified in order to understand the museums that are examined in the thesis. First two parts of the thesis focus on The Museum of Innocence which is an only example of fictional museums in our country founded by writer Orhan Pamuk, and enlighten its processes of foundation, development and exhibition. The last part of the thesis concentrates on the examples of other similar fictional museums in the world. After giving detailed information about the museums, comparative evaluations are made with The Museum of Innocence that is the main topic of the thesis . This study is one of the most comprehensive studies in this area which evaluates The Museum of Innocence, a young museum, which is only seven years old. Through this study process, both examinings on site and the findings obtained during the field research reveal the uniqueness and originality of The Museum of Innocence within the museums created by inspiration from fiction. In the scope of the thesis, 11 fictional museums except from The Museum of Innocence is examined. These are respectively; Sherlock Holmes Museum, Anne of Green Gables Museum, Don Quixote Museum, The Little Prince Museum, James Bond Museum, Hans Christian Andersen Fairytale House, Heidi's House, King Arthur's Hall, Pinocchio Museum, Robin Hood Legacy Visitor Attraction, and Warner Bros Studio Tour-The Making of Harry Potter. While examining them, it is also aimed to show the place of these museums in museology and to compose a database of the aspects of similar and different parts of them. Fictional museums that are attractive for both literature and museum enthusiasts, are places where can be brought together people of all ages and also provided a social education area. In conclusion, due to the multifaceted functions and cultural backgrounds of fictional museums, it is necessary to increase the number of museums in this area and to make more academic studies on this field.
