Investigation of the effectiveness of the 'adaptation to disease manual' for increasing the quality of life and adjustment to the disease in patients undergoing laryngectomy surgery

After the surgical treatment of patients diagnosed with laryngeal cancer, there is a noticeable difference in their quality of life. This study aimed to evaluate the compliance with the disease (SASS) and quality of life (Washington University Quality of Life Scale) in patients who had undergone total and partial laryngectomy surgery, with or without a disease compliance booklet. The research was carried out in a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test post-test design. The sample of the study consisted of 34 patients who applied to a private foundation hospital and a private clinic, diagnosed with laryngeal cancer, underwent total or partial laryngectomy, and volunteered to participate in the study. The data collection process was carried out between September 2022 and October 2022. The Cronbach's alpha value of the Quality of Life Scale used in the study was found to be 0.822, and the Cronbach's alpha value of the Social Adjustment Self-Evaluation Scale was found to be 0.806. The increase in the social adjustment self-assessment post test value (x̄=42,290) compared to the Social Adaptation Self-Evaluation Pre test value (x̄=36,560) was significant (t=-6.061; p=0.000<0.05). The increase in the quality of life post test value (x̄=87,820) compared to the Quality of Life Pre test value (x̄=71,830) was significant (t=-5.446; p=0,000<0.05). According to the findings, the result of the research supports H3, one of the research hypothesis. However, there was not complete response for H1 and H2.
