The rise of the Latin American left in the 21st century and the impact of the political change process on foreign policy: The examples of Venezuela, Brazil and Mexico

The aim of this thesis is to analyze the rise of Latin American left movements in the 21st century and the process of change in specific examples with political and foreign policy elements. Latin America, the level of analysis of the study, will be examined with its political history, foreign policy and left political movements. In this context, Venezuela, Brazil and Mexico are the specific Latin American countries to be analyzed. The effects of political change and political change on foreign policy in countries where leftist administrations take place in Latin America, have been different in each country. As a matter of fact, while there has been a radical change in Venezuela due to the policies based on bolivarism and 21st century socialism since 1999, a moderate change has been experienced in Brazil between 2003-2016 and Mexico since 2018. As a result of the analysis, while anti-imperialism-oriented foreign policy strategy was applied in Venezuela, where radical change was experienced, a moderate reformist foreign policy strategy was applied in Brazil and Mexico, where moderate change was experienced. Ultimately, it was concluded that the political change experienced during the left administration period directly affected foreign policy.
