Structure and theme in Leyla Erbil's novels

Novel, a type of expression, reaches an original dimention with the pen of Leyla Erbil who builds her novels with the approach of psychoanalyst, existentialist and socialist,has philosophical,literary,revolutionary and libertian aspects. Freud's dreams ,Joyce's method 'Stream of Conciousness', Nietzsche's theory of nihilism, Satre's existentialism, Beauvoir's 'other'(identification of other), Freidan's feminism, Nazım's socialism, Mark's rebellion to capitalism, Cehov and Tolstoy's popülist retoric are all found in Erbil's writings as sustaining resources.In this thesis Leyla Erbil, as a writer in the world of literature since 1950, her five novels; Tuhaf Bir Kadın 1971, Karanlığın Günü, Mektup Aşkları, Cüce and Üç Başlı Ejderha have been analyzed with a structuralist analysis. The meanings in the narration and the relation between structure and theme are evaluated. Leyla Erbil sees literature as a functional possibility but not as a comforting action of mankind. One of the aims of the thesis is to follow that function which L.Erbil loads to her novels. In the first chapter,the life and works of Leyla Erbil have been studied as she is one of the most important writers of Turkish Literature.In the second chapter Erbil?s five novels are analyzed in view of structure and theme. Structural elements in the writer?s novels and their values gained in the text and relationship between theme and structure have been evaluated.In all her novels, the analysis of that profoundness loaded to the structure takes place in the center of the thesis as a basic problematic with her innovative manner.Key Words: Leyla Erbil, novel, structure and theme.
