Abstract (EN)
The purpose of the study is to examine whether organizational culture moderates the relationship between motivation to lead (MTL) and leadership avoidance, and to explore whether this relationship differs by gender. The participants consisted of 350 students (120 males, 230 females) from departments of Business Administration and Psychology. Participants first completed the MTL scale. Subsequently, participants were asked to read randomly assigned vignettes of feminine nurturing culture (N = 176) or masculinity contest culture (N = 174). Then, they filled out the leadership avoidance scale, considering themselves to be in a masculinity contest or a feminine nurturing culture. Bivariate correlations, hierarchical regression analyses, an independent sample t-test, and simple slope analysis were conducted to test the hypotheses. Results showed that women have higher levels of leadership avoidance compared to men, even when they have similar levels of MTL as men. Also, the results showed that masculinity contest culture had no effect on the relationship between the three types of MTL and leadership avoidance. On the other hand, the results illustrated that individuals with high noncalculative MTL had lower levels of leadership avoidance in feminine nurturing culture. Furthermore, men with high levels of noncalculative MTL exhibited lower levels of leadership avoidance in feminine nurturing culture compared to women with high levels of noncalculative MTL. The findings were discussed in light of the relevant literature together with the limitations, future directions, and implications of the current study. Keywords: Motivation to lead, leadership avoidance, masculinity contest culture, feminine nurturing culture, gender
