Abstract (EN)

In this study, the relationship between basic psychological needs of high school students and FoMO was investigated and the level of prediction of FoMO level by basic psychological needs was examined. Another aim of the study is to reveal whether the FoMO level of high school students shows a significant difference according to gender, class, school type, parental education level, time spent on social media, type of device used while connecting to social media and device ownership status. Within the scope of the related research, relational survey model, one of the quantitative research methods, was preferred. Fear of missing out (FoMO) scale, basic psychological needs scale-high school form and personal information form were used as data collection tools in the study. The sample group of the study consisted of 719 high school students. While analysing the data of the study, t-test for independent samples, one-way analysis of variance, correlational and multiple linear regression analyses were performed. In the related study, it was determined that the FoMO level of female students was higher than male students. In addition, significant results were found between the average daily time spent on social media and FoMO level, and it was observed that the FoMO level increased as the time spent on social media increased. In addition, in this study, significant differences were found between the basic psychological needs scale and its sub-dimensions and the FoMO scale and its sub-dimensions. Finally, in this study, it was determined that basic psychological needs predicted FoMO. As a result of the research, it was concluded that the level of FoMO decreases as basic psychological needs are met. It was seen that basic psychological needs predicted the level of FoMO. As a result, it can be said that there is a relationship between FoMO and basic psychological needs within the scope of the related research. It can be said that FoMO levels decrease as the basic psychological needs of individuals are met.
