Comparison of the attachment, personality traits and personality organization levels between individuals with substance use disorder and individuals without substance use

The sample of this scientific research consists of 119 individuals who were diagnosed with substance use disorder matched by gender, educational status and age with 119 individuals without substance use group. The individuals, participated in the research were 119 patients that applied to Bursa Dortcelik Mental Health and Diseases Hospital, who were diagnosed by a psychiatrist with substance use disorder and 119 individuals without substance use who were selected from the general population with a random sampling method. Attachment, levels of personality organization and personality traits of the group of the diagnosed with substance use disorder and without substance use group were evaluated using the Personality Organizations Inventory (POI), the Relationship Scales Questionnaire (RSQ), and Coolidge Axis II Inventory (CATI). It was found that two groups differed in terms of attachment, organization levels of personality and personality traits. Subscale mean scores of primitive defenses (p<0,001), reality test (p=0,015), identity diffusion (p<0,001) of the group of diagnosed with substance use disorder have been found higher than group of without substance use. Subscale mean scores of schizotypal (p=0,003), antisocial (p=0,002), borderline (p=0,001) and histrionic (p=0,041) of the group of diagnosed with substance use disorder were higher than the group of without substance use. Primitive defenses and schizotypal personality trait increased the risk of substance use disorder and schizoid and paranoid personality traits decreased the risk of substance use disorder. The significance level for all analysis was taken as p<0,05. The software used for the analysis was IBM SPSS 22.0.
