Abstract (EN)

The "Name Issue" between Macedonia and Greece begins with the Macedonia's declaration of independence. After the disintegration of Yugoslavia, in the year 1991, Macedonia has declared independency under the name of "Republic of Macedonia" but Greece objected to the use of that name by the state with the worries that it would claim ownership on an area called Macedonia in its own boundaries. In this study, the causes underlying the unsolution until these days, of the name issue that occurred between the two countries, have been investigated. The issue was examined in a scope of the nationalistic understandings of the two counties, historical facts of the area, and EU policies on the region. In the conclusion of the research, three basic parameters acting at the unsolution of the name issue between Macedonia and Greece were determined. In order to be understood the aspect more clearly in the study, the theses of the two countries were examined in comparison and these theses that cause to the problem was evaluated with the critical theory. However, in the general of the study the critical view point was used mostly, it was tried to explain the each part with a theory related to its own content. While the first part takes form with the nationalism theory, in the second part, constructivism, supranationalism and rationalism as the theories that have constituted the EU, in the last part, in order to be understood the historical realities, the histories of the two countries was investigated in comparison, and these theses were handled with a critical point of view. As a result, the "Name Issue" between Macedonia and Greece, could not be solved because of the reasons that the two countries have been insisting on the differences of their understandings of nationalism, been claiming a real ownership on the region on historical bases, and the different applications of the EU to the sides of the problem. The solution depends on overcoming these differences and generating collective policies.
