The social and economical stracture of Gördes district according to the Temettuat Records of Finance Ministry

ABSTRACT "The Social and Economical Stracture of Gördes District according to the 'temettuat' Records of Finance Ministry" titled study is based on the 'temettuat' records of Gördes prepared during the enumeration of 'temettuat' recordings in 1845. The aforementioned enumerations have an important place among the regulations which have taken place in fiscal area. Together with regulations in fiscal area, collection of taxes in a more regular and just way, had become a current issue. Taking this aim into consideration it was decided to demand taxes from public according to their wealth and income. In order to establish taxes in accordance with the financial power of public, enumeration of real estates, animals and incomes had been effected which were belonged to people who lived in cities, districts, and villages of both Anatolia and Balkans. The 'temettuat" records prepared during the enumerations carried out in the regions of whole country which are included in Tanzimat, contains ample informations about the socio-economic structure of Ottoman Empire at the time these enumerations materialized. Furthermore, we attempted to make some evaluations by analyzing the socio economic structure of district in 1 844, in the basis of 'temettuat* records of Gördes district. This study contributed to establish the population of the district in 1844, together with the family names and epithets used in the region, the occupations of people, their annual incomes from these occupations, their lands, buildings, and animals. The products yielded in the district, and taxes payed to the government are established as well, which contributed study to become more fruitful. In this study the evaluations are made individually for districts and villages. Moreover, by means of comparisons drawn between districts and villages, different features of them are attempted to put forth for consideration. We have compared the results reached by this study with those of other studies on the cities and districts of West Anatolia province. In so doing we tried to conclude more satisfactory evaluations about the socio-economic structure of the district Gördes. IV
