Contemporary reflections of mandala

This study is about ?mandala? which takes its source from Hinduist and Buddhist doctrines. Mandala, as a formal and semantic content, was studied to determine the projections on Abstract Expressionist art movement. In the study, with mandala?s functions are taken into consideration it can be said that, its religious, universal and symbolic structure is researched in the manner of historical development and change. Mandala is discussed in Western World?s point of view based on Mircea Eliade, Carl Gustav Jung and Gershom Scholem?s thoughts of symbolizm. Mandala is analyzed on the way it occurs to be used as a theoretical and practical symbol in western plastic arts. Various artists? usage of mandala in their art works were analyzed in the context of Abstract Expressionism. In the thesis, it is tried to determine the traces of imagination of mandala in the manner of ?Abstract Expressionist? art movement and the current usage of mandala within the scope of the works of artists. Additionally, by using photographic techniques, one of the Abstract Islamic art movement leading architect?s master piece is emphised with its components that evokes mandala.
