Determination of incidence of complications and life quality after mandibular impacted third molar surgery

Post-operativecomplications of the mandibular third molar teeth might cause extended postoperativetreatment and continued pain. The most frequent complications arepain, edema, trismus, infection, alveolitis, hemorrhage, paresthesia, andmandibular fractures. The aim of this study is determination of the frequency ofoccurrence, severity and type of complications developing after mandibularimpacted third molar teeth surgery, examination of their reasons, prevention ofobserved complications, and to increase the patients post-operative quality oflife. The study involved 121 mandibular impacted third molar teeth of a total of105 patients (77 female, 28 male, mean age=26,63±11,26, ranging in 16 to 83years). The age, gender, medical history, bad habits, classification of impactedthird molar teeth, postoperatif complications such as pain, edema, trismus andparesthesia, oral hygiene in addition to oral contraceptive use and menstruationperiods of patients were recorded. VAS in which the determining postoperativeedema and pain, the life quality questionnaire were used. Statisticallysignificant results were seen between VAS and existence of edema (94, 5.5±3.06,p=0.004), and bleeding complication (29, 6.24±2.77, p=0.019), between theoperation period and existence of edema (94, 30.65±15.49, p=0.005) andparesthesia complication (10, 41.2±5.15, p= 0.006). The relation betweenexistence of edema and class II (46, 48.9%, p= 0.002) and partial bone retention(54, 57.4%, p=0.006) were statistically significant. Besides, the relation betweentrismus and partial bone retention (5, 62.5%, p=0.046) were found statisticallysignificant. The post-operative findings affecting quality of life are pain, edema,trismus, and paresthesia. A careful surgical technique and operative diligencecoupled with implementation by the patients of post-operative directivesreduce the frequency and intensity of complications.Keywords: Mandibular impacted third molar teeth, complication, VAS, lifequality
