Tattoo tradition in Mardin and around and applicability to garment designs

The tattoo, which has a history as old as human history, using the materials such as tattoo, soot, indigo, gall, breast milk, under the skin with needles. In Mardin and around, women and girls carried tattoos as a religious and cultural symbol in their bodies. In Mardin and around, tattoo is seen as a mirror of body and soul. It is believed that tattoos are processed on the body bring embellishment, evil eye, charm, beauty and beauty. This thesis study was carried out in 3 stages. In the first stage, historical evaluation of tattoo marks (tamga, stamp) was conducted. In the results obtained, especially the Orkhon Inscriptions, Özgün Turfan manuscripts and the signs in the Uyuk Arjan Inscriptions, similarities with the signs of the tattoos in Mardin and around were investigated. The similarities between the symbols on the sewn stones in the Turkish Tamga and Göbeklitepe temples on the coins belonging to Çağatay and Nogay Turks and the signs of tattoos in Mardin region were investigated. In the second stage, the tattoo art and motifs made by traditional methods in Mardin and around were examined in detail. Tattoo motifs are defined. It is classified as tattoos on the face, tattoos on the hand, tattoos on the invisible places of the feet and body, according to the area of application. At this stage, the changes and transformation differences in today's modern tattoos with the traditional tattoo methods are examined. Also at this stage, during the interviews with the source people, a series of surveys were conducted and the data obtained were analyzed. At the last stage, the applicability of tattoo art to wearable designs has been determined and developed new design models. The design is inspired by the general appearance of tattoo / deco motifs in traditional methods. Machine embroidery design and digital printing design were applied, depending on the region where the tattoo was applied and the originality of the tattoo motif.
