Performance analysis of container ports in Marmara region

Maritime transportation is one of the oldest transportation models dating back to the first civilizations. The most important factor in the global growth and development of this transportation method is that most of the world is covered with water. With the developing technology, container transportation has emerged in order to unitize cargo. Container transportation is one of the most used types of freight transportation in our country and in the world. Thanks to container transportation, different cargoes are loaded into the same container and transported from one place to another. There are special equipment in ports for container transportation. These equipment owned by ports play an important role in increasing investments and developing technology. In this study, multi-criteria decision-making methods were used to analyze the performance of container ports in the Marmara region, to determine the variables affecting performance and to create performance rankings of the ports. Data obtained from TÜRKLİM was used to conduct the analyses. EXCEL program was used to analyze the data. Entopy weighting method was used in the study to understand the importance of the variables. TOPSIS, MAUT, VIKOR, PROMETHEE methods were used as the ranking method and BORDA ranking technique was used to determine the final performance ranking of the ports. This study is expected to contribute to the literature by revealing the performances of Marmara region container ports with different methods. The sectoral contribution of the study is that ports can monitor their performance in a competitive environment, compare their own performance with similar ports, and identify areas that are open to improvement.
