The use of the Martini-Henry rifle in the Ottoman Empire and its social and cultural implications

This thesis attempts to examine the use of the Martini-Henry rifle in the Ottoman Empire and its social and cultural implications. The study first examines the rifle's arrival in the Ottoman Empire, noting its positive inclusion in the Ottoman military inventory. The second part of the study investigates the rifle's role in various social events such as banditry and smuggling. Finally, newspapers, stories, novels, and folk songs related to the Martini- Henry rifle, the main focus of this thesis, are reviewed to examine its reflection in cultural life. The study conducted a literature review for research on similar or related topics. In particular, the first part explores the process of the Martini-Henry rifle's introduction to the Ottoman Empire, and the second part explores the rifle's social repercussions, which explores Ottoman archival documents. Using primary sources such as the archive documents examined, the Martini-Henry rifle, which gained a place in Ottoman military and social life, was investigated. The Ottoman Empire, which had been undergoing various military transformations for some time, sought to equip its army with modern weaponry. The Ottoman Empire, striving to modernize its army to meet the demands of the era, established naval and land engineering schools and worked to equip its forces with modern weapons. To this end, it purchased 600,000 Martini-Henry rifles from the American private arms company, Providence Tool Company. These rifles were well-received and used by military circles. Over time, however, the rifles fell into the hands of the general public; their name was mentioned in connection with banditry and smuggling. The Martini-Henry rifle also found its place in cultural life, appearing in folk songs sung in honor of a beloved bandit or Zeybek (a type of folk dancer), in newspaper articles, and in stories and novels about the Turkish War of Independence.
