Abstract (EN)
The purpose of this study is to inquire how "time" is perceived in philosophy. The question of "what is time" has been studied by many philosophers since the ancient times and among these, 20th century philosopher John Ellis McTaggart has an important place with his "The Unreality of Time" argument. Our thesis contains of three parts. The first part focuses on the thoughts about time in philosophy until McTaggart. In this section, the Aristotelian physics which was adopted to objective time understanding and the subjective time understanding which was developed against the Aristotelian physics, the Newtonian physics which was adopted to absolute time understanding and the relational time understanding which was developed against the Newtonian physics, the Einsteinian physics which was adopted to relative time understanding and finally other approaches will be evaluated briefly. Thus, to what extend McTaggart was influenced by the earlier ideas will be investigated. In the second part, we will focus on McTaggart's"The Unreality of Time" argument in detail. Then a detailed analysis, including the concepts of the A series, B series and C series which are essential on McTaggart's systematic was performed. In the last part of our study, the theories of time developed after McTaggart and the discussions on the philosophy of time in the 20th century were analyzed. In this final part, the defenders of A series; Presentism Theory, Growing Universe Theory, Reductionism and the defenders of B series; Eternalism, Fatalism, Block Universe Theory and Platonism were examined respectively. Thus, the pre-McTaggart, the McTaggart argument and the post-McTaggart arguments were all covered and analyzed in our study. Keywords: History of Philosophy, Philosophy of Time, Time, Unreality Of Time, McTaggart, A series, B series.
