Analyzing religious works in Mecmua-i Saz ü Söz

The purpose of this study is analyzing musically and literarily the Religious Works in Mecmua-i Saz ü Söz, revealing the concept of religious music in XVII. century Ottoman Empire. The study consists of four chapters. Even though the main subject of the thesis is given in the fourth chapter, in order to strengthen the ability of comprehension, a general study has been made about the musical climate of the century that Ali Ufki lived in first chapter. In second chapter, it has been given general information about the life of Ali Ufki. In third chapter, subjects of the Work of Mecmua-i Saz ü Söz, which also includes the religious music works, has been explained in detail and also has been evaluated in terms of the fasıl-makam, usul and genre. In the last chapter which is the main part of the study religious music works have been musically and lyrically analyzed. During the analysis of the religious music works, they are classified as Ilahi, Tesbih, Tevhid and Ayin-i Şerif, and each work was evaluated under the genre which it belongs. During the evaluation, each work is handled under the separate subheadings within the genres mentioned above, and first the notes of works were given, then the position of works in Mecmua-i Saz ü Söz were determined. After that works were analyzed musically, the makam, usul and form of each work were determined. Then, the lyrics of the religious works were transcribed from original texts, syllabic and aruz prosody of the works were determined. Moreover, syllable structure analysed and aruz takti of the works were made, and to make lyrics more understandable unknown words were explained. Finally, the meanings of the lyrics were explained. As a result of all these analysis, religious music in Mecmua-i Saz ü Söz were revealed in detail. Keywords: Mecmua-i Saz ü Söz, Ali Ufki Bey, Ottoman / Turkish Music in XVII.
