Özet (EN)
Storytelling is as old as human history. Throughout time, humanity has developed mediums and tools to transmit and share knowledge, experiences, and lived events. As an innate aspect of human nature, storytelling continues to evolve through technological advancements, reemerging in diverse media and forms. Unlike literary narratives, storytelling (with its distinct purpose and formal characteristics) has become a versatile tool adopted by various disciplines. Across all fields, storytelling tools have transitioned from oral to written traditions and, with the advent of digital culture, have transformed into new hybrid forms. These tools are now classified as traditional, neo-modern/digital, and transmedia, often incorporating visual, auditory, or multisensory elements. This study examines storyboards—a storytelling medium rooted in written and electronic traditions yet adaptable to both traditional and digital formats—focusing on their application in spatial design. By analyzing methodologies from cinema to advertising, the research explores how storyboards can be integrated into spatial design and production processes. The paper first deconstructs the concept of narrative, explores story typologies, and reviews storytelling methods and tools. Next, it delineates the defining features and construction techniques of storyboards as a narrative device. While theoretical findings form the core of the study, a select number of applied examples in spatial design are critically analyzed. Through this framework, the study highlights the potential of storyboards as a creative and methodological tool in spatial design.
