Özet (EN)

The Historical and Geographical Dictionary of the Ottoman Territories (Memâlik-i Osmaniye'nin Târih ve Coğrafya Lügâtı), prepared by Ali Cevad Bey—one of the prominent geographers and historians of his time—was compiled in the late 19th century as part of efforts to systematically record the administrative, geographical, and historical structure of the Ottoman Empire. This work, written in four volumes, introduces cities, towns, villages, mountains, rivers, and other similar settlements within Ottoman geography in alphabetical order. It not only presents historical and geographical information, but also includes explanations regarding the origins of place names, administrative affiliations, and socio-economic characteristics. The text adopts an encyclopedic approach and is supported by maps. The work contributes to the production of scientific knowledge during the Ottoman period. Furthermore, Ali Cevad's methodological choices and his contribution to the information system of the era are observable. The Historical and Geographical Dictionary of the Ottoman Territories serves as a valuable source for research in the fields of history, geography, and toponymy.
