Abstract (EN)
Women go through various phases of physiological changes according to their ages throughout their lives under the influence of various sex hormones. During the productive period, which is roughly between the ages of 15 and 45, ovaries produce estrogen, progesterone, and a small amount of testosterone along with the ovulation cycle. After menopause, which means the end of the reproductive period, hormone production can no longer be made in the ovaries. While the balanced release of hormones ensures a healthy reproductive and sexual life, its deficiency and imbalance manifests itself through various gynecological and sexual dysfunctions. In addition to the chemical hormone therapy, recently the trend to use phytotherapeutic agents against hormonal deficiency and imbalances has increased. In this study, the plants traditionally used by the Anatolian women against menopausal complaints are investigated. After scanning the research databases for ethnobotanical studies, the plants used in gynecological diseases and their methods of use, contents and biological activities are identified and examined in detail. The plants that affect the hormonal levels, particularly the ones that are effective during the menopausal period against vasomotor symptoms, mood changes, sexual dysfunction, genitourinary syndrome, obesity and osteoporosis, and that are preferred for their aphrodisiac activity, have been surveyed and scientific studies covering these plants have been evaluated. The study has aimed to determine the plants that could be utilized for the relief of menopausal complaints and improve the loss of sexual desire, or that have the potential to benefit from further research.
