Effect of hazardous drugs on pharmacists, compounding issues and distribution errors are three major risks that are still associated with the medication processes. Risks associated with handling the hazardous drugs have been addressed since 1970's. Due to non-selective mode, antineoplastic agents have many adverse effects on the health of patient as well as the health of healthcare workers. Many studies showed that people working in such contaminating workplaces have traces of antineoplastic agents in their body even if they are not handling antineoplastic drugs directly. Hazardous outcome of oncology drugs can be minimized by developing an automated closed transfer system. Beside hazardous effects of drugs, main medication issues are compounding errors and distribution errors. A literature review has been conducted to analyze four themes of drug compounding which if ignored can lead to serious medication errors. Possibilities of distribution errors have also been discussed. After a detail analysis, possible solutions for all these issues have been presented. Design methodology of thesis has been developed to make a high-precision compoundind and controlled dosing system for occupational hazardous drugs. Software routine of presented system acts as a quality plan for compounding process which keeps the pharmacists and nurses adhered to a specific protocol. Features like high-accuracy, barcode medical administration (BCMA), electronic medication records (eMARs), customized label printing and automatized calculation routine inhibit occurring of many compounding and distribution errors.
