Disorded eating pattern in patients monitored with metabolic syndrome

OBJECTIVE: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is an endocrinopathy that contains a combination of systemic disorders such as abdominal obesity, glucose intolerance or diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, hypertension and coronary artery disease etc. Worldwide, it is increasing day by day and causes serious morbidity. Lifestyle change is remarkable in its treatment. Eating behavior seems to be effective in the emergence or maintenance of the disease because it is often associated with weight problems. The aim of this study was to investigate eating behaviors in patients with MetS and related metabolic disorders and to determine which disordered eating behaviour could predict the diagnosis of MetS. METHODS: A total of 85 subjects were included in the study. Sociodemographic data form, SCID-5 / CV, Eating Disorder Assessment Scale (EDE-Q), Yale Food Addiction Scale (YFAS), Dutch Eating Behaviour Questionnaire (DEBQ), The Life Experiences Survey (LES), Healthy Life Style Behavior Scale II- Modified Form (HLSB-II) was applied. During the analysis, the sample group was divided into two groups according to the MetS diagnostic criteria of International Diabetes Federation (IDF). RESULTS: The group with MetS diagnosis was found to be significantly older than the group without diagnosis. In the group diagnosed with MetS; night eating habits, restriction behavior, the level of concern about food, weight and body shape was significantly higher than the undiagnosed group. There was no difference between the two groups in terms of food addiction, binge eating behavior or emotional eating. In regression analysis, it was found that weight concern was a significant predictor of MetS diagnosis. CONCLUSION: In this study, it was found that the diagnosis of MetS increased especially with age and these individuals were more anxious about eating, weight and body shape and showed a tendency to restrict.
