The effect of infographics use to reading comprehension in intertextual readings

In this research, the effects of infographic usage in intertextual readings on reading comprehension are examined in the teaching of "Emotions" theme of 8th Grade Turkish course. The study was designed as a random pattern from real experimental patterns, with pretest-posttest control group. In the study, the effects of infographic elements developed in the context of intertextual reading on children's reading comprehension were examined in the dimensions of knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis and evaluation. In the data collection part of the study, written exam questions used in the Secondary Turkish Language Textbook of 2017-2018 school year were used to measure the meanings in terms of knowledge, comprehension, practice, analysis, synthesis and evaluation. The study group consisted of 30 experimental, 30 control group students. Regarding the findings of the research; Mann Whitney U test was used for comparisons between groups; it was found that there is a statistically significant difference between the posttest scores of the experimental and control groups; which shows that infographics prepared according to intertextual readings have an effect on reading comprehension skills. Regarding reading comprehension sub-dimensions, experimental group students' reading comprehension level was found to be more successful than control group students' in the levels of knowledge, understanding, application, analysis, synthesis and evaluation. These results indicate that the use of infographic elements in intertextual readings positively affects the success of reading comprehension.
