Abstract (EN)

Background: Diabetes patients should be made aware of the causes, facilitating factors, early diagnosis and treatment of diabetes. To prevent acute and / or chronic complications that may develop over time, a good treatment, a good follow-up and good education should be the first step. With the training programs to be made to the patients, the patients will be more easily directed to the lifestyle changes required for treatment and follow-up. One of the issues that should be considered in these training programs is the level of general health knowledge and diabetes literacy of the patients. The health literacy questionnaire is used to evaluate the overall health literacy of patients. In order to evaluate the level of diabetes knowledge, the more specific Diabetes Knowledge Test-2 scale was developed. Since the validity and reliability study of the Turkish translation of the Diabetes Knowledge Test-2 questionnaire is not yet available, we aimed to conduct this study. We also compared the general health literacy of these patients with their level of diabetes knowledge. Materials and Methods: The Turkish version of the Diabetes Knowledge Test-2 questionnaire was developed in accordance with published and accepted rules in the literature. Intercultural coherence of the Diabetes Knowledge Test-2 questionnaire was ensured. Then, 148 patients with diabetes mellitus who were followed up at Hitit University Medical Faculty Hospital were administered Turkish Diabetes Knowledge Test-2 twice with two weeks' interval and the Health Literacy questionnaire once. Spearman's correlation analysis was used to examine the relationship between the scores of the patients that they obtained from the Turkish Diabetes Knowledge Test-2 scale. Besides, the test-retest reliability was evaluated by using the intraclass correlation coefficient, and the construct validity of the Turkish Diabetes Knowledge Test-2 scale was measured by testing convergent and discriminant validity. Results: Of the 148 patients participating in the study, 86 (58.1%) were male, and 62 (49.1%) were female. The mean age of the participants was 47.5±1.8. The scale was determined to have been administered to the same 100 patients for the second time with a mean interval of 15.9±5.3 (min: 7-max: 30) days. When the test-retest reliability was evaluated with the intraclass correlation coefficient, a high coefficient value, such as 0.893 (95% CI = 0.841-0.928), was found for the overall scale. The intraclass correlation coefficient was calculated as 0.826 (95% CI = 0.741-0.883) for the general test and 0.801 (95% CI = 0.704-0.866) for insulin use. For the total score and scale sections, the correlation coefficient between the two applications was found to be 0.644 and greater. On the other hand, the examination of the Bland-Altman plot indicated that the test-retest results were consistent in a 95% confidence interval. Spearman's correlation analysis showed that there was a significant relationship between the scores of Turkish Diabetes Knowledge Test-2 and Turkish Health Literacy-32. A moderate positive correlation was found between the scores of Turkish Health Literacy-32 and Turkish Diabetes Knowledge Test-2 (P= 0,378). Conclusion: The Turkish version of the Diabetes Knowledge Test-2 questionnaire was found to be valid and reliable. This test can be used to assess the level of diabetes knowledge in all patients with diabetes.
