Serum NTproCNP level in migraine attack

Abstract (EN)

Migraine is a neurobiological headache disorder caused by increased excitability of the central nervous system. Besides, all known pharmacological triggers of migraine have vasoactive properties and are potent vasodilators such as natriuretic peptides. Clarification of the mechanisms related to natriuretic peptides may also contribute to understanding the pathophysiology of neurovascular diseases such as migraine. Therefore, in this study, it was aimed to determine the level of N-Terminal pro C-type natriuretic (NTproCNP), an equimolar product of CNP, in migraine patients with and without aura, and to investigate its relation with migraine and aura. Groups in this study; control, migraine with aura and migraine without aura groups. The study included 31 patients with aura, 28 migraine without aura, and 29 healthy people in the control group who were admitted to the Neurology Polyclinics and emergency service of Erzurum Regional Training and Research Hospital and diagnosed with episodic migraine according to ICHD criteria. NTproCNP level measurement in serum was made by ELISA method. The data obtained were evaluated using the SPSS 18.0 statistics program. An increase in serum NTproCNP levels was found in the migraine group with aura compared to the control and migraine without aura group (p: 0,036, p: 0,236 and p: 0,365). When the CRP, leukocyte monocyte and neutrophil levels were evaluated between the groups, there was no statistically significant difference (p: 0,238 p: 0,907 p: 0,263 p: 0,111). The results show that increased NTproCNP levels in migraine patients with aura may be associated with the aura. This suggests that NTproCNP associated synaptic stability and microcirculation change may play a mediating role using trigeminovascular and cortical spreading depression (CSD) pathways associated with pain and aura in migraine. Identifying the role of NTproCNp in migraine may contribute to elucidating intracellular mechanisms during migraine attacks, and may represent a new goal for the development of migraine treatments.
