Abstract (EN)
Migraine is a primary type recurrent headache, which is most prevalent between ages 30-39 and is more common among women. A migraine induced headache is pulsating, lasts between 4 to 72 hours, could either be unilateral or bilateral and is potentially accompanied by other symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, photophobia and phonophobia. It is usually provoked by movement and causes considerable loss of work productivity.Prior to the headache attacks, some patients may experience a 5 to 60 minute long aura in the form of positive or negative visual or auditory phenomena and slurred speech. Migrane is diagnosed clinically and any radiology or labaratory tests performed are only useful to eliminate secondary causes. There has been several hypotheses to date regarding the pathogenesis of migraine. The most interesting one that came out in recent years is the brainstem generator theory. According to this theory, structures on brain stem contribute to the formation of migraine related headaches, therefore in case of a migraine the brain stem is said to be affected.This study has been performed prospectively with 52 patients with a definitive diagnosis of migraine in accordance with the IHS criteria. and a control group 52 healthy individuals at the Neurology Clinic of Inonu University, Turgut Ozal Medical Center. Results of VEMP testing were compared between the patient and control groups. The purpose is to evaluate its contribution to pathogenezis. A significant decrease was determined for left p1 amplitude and left p1, n1 latency values in migraine patients. Other than that, there was no statistically meaningful difference with the control group for n1 amplitude values, p1,n1 latency values, right-left ear n1 latency values and right-left ear amplitude difference.Considering the results of previous VEMP studies, it was decided that the one sided finding of a decrease in p1 amplitude and p1-n1 amplitude difference was not meaningful.As a result, further studies are needed with larger groups of patients to support the use and increase the meaningfulness of VEMP testing in migrane cases.
