The approach of the Nationalist Movement Party's to the Cyprus problem (1971-1985): The case of Töre Journal

In this study, the approach of the Nationalist Movement Party to the Cyprus problem has been examined in the context of the Töre Journal. Although Töre Journal is not one of the official publications of the MHP, it was founded by MHP member Emine Işınsu. The academic and writer enrollee of the Journal also consist of members of the MHP. Therefore, the articles, published in the journal on the Cyprus issue between 1971-1985 shed light on how the MHP approached the Cyprus problem at that time. Hence, in this part, the publication process of Töre Journal, its writer member and its development are mentioned. In order to understand the content of the articles in the journal in a beter way, the theory of nationalism and the effect of nationalism on foreing policy are explained. Afterwards, the factors that revealed the nationalist ideology of the MHP and the nationalist ideology that shaped the foreign policy of the party were discussed. In the articles published between 1971-1974, the approaches of the academicians, who were members of MHP, to the Cyprus problem and the policies they followed in this period were mentioned. In the last part,their approaches to the Cyprus issue in 1974-1985 and the search for solutions for the sosyo-economic problems in Cyprus are discussed.In conclusion, parties that did not want to stay out of the activity in the publishing life in 1971-1985 and that wanted to present content for their bases within framework of their ideological understanding, wanted achieve these goals with relatively independent journals rather than official publications. Therefore, academics and writers whose articles on Cyprus were published in the Journal discussed the Cyprus issue from a nationalist perspective. This shows that they prioritized legitimizing their nationalist ideology rather than solving the Cyprus problem.
