Museum architecture today emerges as an active agent embodying institutional identities and visitor experiences. This doctoral research investigates how architectural discourses of recently designed, purpose-built art museums communicate institutional identities and how visitors engage, interpret, or transform these spatial narratives. Focusing on three prominent contemporary and modern art museums in Istanbul, Istanbul Modern, Arter, and the Istanbul Museum of Painting and Sculpture, the study explores the interplay between institutional discourse, architectural representation, and visitor experience. Employing qualitative methods for institutional discourses and visitor experiences, this study reveals how architectural decisions align with and express curatorial ideologies, cultural positioning, and public engagement strategies. The comparative analysis highlights how institutions utilise architecture strategically, embedding cultural and ideological messages within their spatial designs. Findings show significant divergences and convergences among the three museums, emphasising the nuanced relationships institutions establish with their visitors through architectural narratives. This research contributes conceptually by positioning museum architecture as a discursive field where institutional strategies intersect with social interpretations, thereby extending the discussion of museum architecture beyond aesthetic concerns into broader socio-cultural contexts.
