A sustainable model proposal for architectural education

Architecture is a discipline, that is affected by recent events and approaches and has still been experiencing, development and transformation processes. Architectural education, is also supposed to keep up with such developments and update itself accordingly. Architectural design studios, which successfully combine knowledge and ability flow, are an important component in this process. This dissertation aims to evaluate the current developments, educational policies and approaches and to develop a sustainable model for architectural design studios accordingly. This model also assumes that sustainability can be best achieved through a knowledge and research based vision. For the purposes of theoretical background to the study, ecoles of architecture, modern architectural education approaches, and educational policies that lead to and direct abovementioned changes and developments were examined first. This phase, primarily focused on the factors affecting architectural design studios and pedagogical initiatives. Later, the importance of knowledge and research in architectural education and architectural design studio pedagogy, weaknesses and strengths experienced and how it is processed were thoroughly examined. The data obtained through document analysis method in this conceptually designed study were adapted into the conceptual framework of the model suggested through comparative analysis and implications with historical method. The model proposed is significant in the sense that it is evaluated with regards to its projections based on the analysis of historical background of architectural education, implications from the knowledge and research-based educational models and teaching style and learning theories in studio education and its evaluation in parallel with up-to-date tendencies.
